Communal Voice and Sacred Chanting
Kirtan is the ancient contemplative practice of call-and-response group singing. Through sacred mantra repetition and acoustic resonance, individual voices merge into a grounded field of shared presence and connection.
In a Kirtan circle, the leader and the participants merge to create a meditative, trance inducing, at times ecstatic space of unity with a shared intention to connect with the Divine. This form of practice has its roots in the Vedic teachings as well as Buddhism. It is a form of yoga and meditation that uses the power of song. After a lifetime of singing and over 20 years of yogic commitment, to turn her attention to Kirtan for Ola was an obvious path.
Through her work with Spark of Spirit, Ola shares a New Age approach to Kirtan with the electro-acoustic sound, giving ancient mantras a unique, modern sound. Honoring the acoustic traditions of Kirtan Ola also shares this special practice as a solo leader with a guitar or harmonium and as part of larger ensembles. Her pallet of mantras include ancient Sanskrit and Buddhist ones as well as originals that she channels in both English and Polish and popular medicine songs, simple and easy to follow along with.
Ola weaves the ancestral devotional melodies with contemporary somatic vocal awareness cultivated through years of Voice Yoga practice, sharing with her audience ways of deeper connection with their bodies and their voices. She brings in elements of Sound Healing and Sound Journey, creating musical space in which contemplation and meditation are inspired. For this she brings out the many instruments that she plays including flutes, violin, guitar, keyboards and soft percussion.
